Lower fuel consumption than the predecessor yet enhanced dynamics – a neat way of summing up the new SLK 350. These advantages are primarily due to the latest-generation direct gasoline injection from Mercedes-Benz, which operates using spray-guided combustion and high-pressure injection by means of piezo injectors. Maximum output is 302 hp, while the peak torque of 273 ft-lbs is available at 3500 rpm. In addition to the modified combustion process, further factors which help to reduce fuel consumption include a completely new air intake and exhaust system, controlled ancillaries, intelligent alternator management and consistently applied lightweight-design principles.

Outstanding refinement is another of the new V6 engine’s hallmark traits. And in terms of driving enjoyment, the new 6-cylinder engine is also efficient: with a powerful response at low engine speeds and great handling refinement over the full engine speed range, rounded off by the use of a resonance intake manifold for impressive sound.

The SLK stands for dynamic performance and agility at the highest level. Drivers who enjoy life in the fast lane also need to be able to shift gears quickly. That's why the power of the engine is transmitted through a transmission system which is harmonized with the temperament of this vehicle.

7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission
The SLK 350 is equipped as standard with the efficiency-optimized 7G-TRONIC PLUS 7-speed automatic transmission. The 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission uses the latest-generation torque-converter clutch, which results in a more dynamic response, greater durability, further-reduced noise levels and significantly lowered fuel consumption. In addition, the seven forward gears of the 7G-TRONIC PLUS transmission make possible a constant fine-adjustment of the engine speed, short shift times and smooth gear shifting. At the same time driving enjoyment is enhanced: the vehicle accelerates more powerfully and develops greater pulling power. And when moving down through the gears, the multiple downshift capability allows several gears to be skipped if required. The driver can use a switch in the centre console to pre-select one of the two customized transmission modes of "E" (economic) and "S" (sport). In conjunction with the steering wheel shift paddles, a third mode of "M" (manual) is also available for even faster gear shifting.

Integrated safety concept

The integral safety concept from Mercedes-Benz divides vehicle safety into four phases:

During the journey, the vehicle helps the driver to identify critical situations promptly and handle them safely. In the second phase, in the event of danger, numerous preventive measures can be activated to reduce the risk of injury. In the event of an accident, the occupants can benefit from effective, individualised protection provided by the comprehensive range of passive safety systems. Finally, the fourth component comprises the phase after an accident, when for example the hazard warning flashers are automatically activated to reduce the risk of new accidents.

Most accidents start long before the actual collision: with a lapse in concentration, poor visibility or an unanticipated hazard. So we have fitted the new SLK roadster with innovative safety and assistance systems which promote relaxed driving and help the driver to bring critical situations under control.

DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control^1b helps the driver to maintain a specified distance from the vehicle in front when travelling at speeds of 0 to 200 km/h.

Implementing BAS PLUS Brake Assist in conjunction with the PRE-SAFE®^1b brake system helps to avoid rear-end collisions more effectively. If radar sensors identify a potential collision hazard and the driver applies the brakes, BAS PLUS is primed to apply a braking pressure in accordance with the situation.

If a potential collision hazard is identified within the speed range 30 to 200 km/h and the driver fails to apply the brakes in good time, the PRE-SAFE®[1] brake system emits visual and audible signals. If the driver does not respond to this warning, independent partial braking is activated approximately 1.6 seconds before the calculated impact at a deceleration rate of up to 4m/s2. If the system categorizes the situation as highly critical and there is still no reaction from the driver, an independent full brake application can be initiated automatically 0.6 seconds before what is considered an unavoidable impact.

The ATTENTION ASSIST function is particularly helpful on long journeys and when driving at night; the system warns the driver if it detects signs of failing attention and increasing weariness.

Between 80 and 180 km/h, ATTENTION ASSIST warns the driver visually and audibly as soon as it detects any signs of drowsiness or inattention. Sensors analyze driving behavior to detect any changes compared with the previously determined individual driver profile.

The ADAPTIVE BRAKE system provides enhanced ride comfort and safety. With the anti-lock braking system it helps drivers to master critical braking maneuvers. Thanks to the functions for "dry braking" in wet conditions and "priming", the brakes react even more directly. When starting on an incline unintentional rolling back is prevented and if you press the brake pedal a second time the HOLD function keeps the vehicle securely in its place.

Open or closed?
The fully electrical, retractable Mercedes-Benz vario-roof transforms the SLK from a coupe to a roadster at the touch of a button in just 20 seconds. It is also optionally available as a tinted panoramic vario-roof ^1c. The tinted polycarbonate unit lets some sunlight in while reducing insolation by day, creating a pleasant atmosphere in the vehicle interior.

The optional MAGIC SKY CONTROL^2c turns fantasy into reality. One touch lets sunlight in through a transparent glass roof, or darkens it within seconds to provide shaded visibility. An industry first, MAGIC SKY CONTROL uses electric impulses to open or close tiny crystals on a wafer-thin film sitting between two layers of the panoramic roof, effectively blocking out the desired amount of incoming sunlight. Depending on the desired intensity of sun, virtually 100% of the light can be let in – or up to 75% can be blocked out, all at the touch of a button. Even when the roof is in its transparent state, the driver remains protected from the summer heat – so the choice of light level won't ever affect comfort.

Extending the open-top season
If things get a bit windy with the roof open, the best possible neutralization of wind turbulence can be achieved with the optional AIRGUIDE draft-stop system[1]. Made of transparent Plexiglas elements attached to the roll-over bars, it allows air circulation to be adjusted at will for driver and passenger without impeding or limiting the view towards the rear. When the draft stop is not needed, the Plexiglas elements can disappear again behind the roll-over bars.

The standard leather and optional Nappa leather appointments feature a special coating that noticeably reduces the degree to which the seats are heated up by intense sunlight, thus ensuring greater seating comfort.
